The life behind the music
Born Donna Adrian Gaines in Boston, Donna Summer developed a career that connected gospel-rooted vocal power, musical theatre and the recording studios of Europe. Her partnership with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte helped place her voice at the centre of disco’s changing sound. Love to Love You Baby brought an intimate studio approach to a long dance record; I Feel Love paired an expressive singer with an insistently electronic pulse.
Summer’s importance also lies in her range. Last Dance turns a ballad opening into a dance-floor release. Bad Girls gives a pop album both grit and spectacle. She Works Hard for the Money carries a forceful, direct message into the 1980s. These recordings are a useful reminder that disco was never simply a single beat: it could hold storytelling, theatre, technology and a highly individual voice.
