“Shining Star” (1975), from That’s the Way of the World, is a joyful funk song that encourages listeners to shine in their own way. The music is bright and confident, with brass, harmony and a rhythm that lifts the listener, and the message is simple: everyone has a light worth showing.

The song’s optimism is not naive. It acknowledges that shining takes effort, and that the world does not always make it easy. But the groove insists that the effort is worth it. That combination — a serious message, delivered with joy — became Earth, Wind & Fire’s signature, and “Shining Star” is one of its clearest examples.
