“Faithfully” (1983), from Frontiers, is a ballad about life on tour and about keeping a promise despite being away from home for long stretches. The vocal is tender and direct, the piano and guitar support it without crowding it, and the song’s feeling is one of loyalty tested by distance. It is a road song, but it is also a love song, and it holds both ideas together without choosing between them.

The song has become a favourite for listeners who know what it is like to be away from someone they love, whether on tour, at work or in any life that keeps people apart. Its promise is simple and its delivery is sincere, and that combination is why “Faithfully” still resonates, decades after its release, as a song about staying true when staying close is hard.
