1988 · Behind the Songs
Gratitude set to melody — and a farewell for the ages.

Written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley, Wind Beneath My Wings had already been recorded by Roger Whittaker, Lou Rawls, and Gary Morris before Bette Midler claimed it for the closing scene of Beaches (1988), her weeper co-starring Barbara Hershey. Sung as a farewell between lifelong friends, it lands like a benediction — gratitude set to melody, the unsung hero finally getting their verse.

Midler’s version topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and, at the 1990 Grammys, won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It has since become a staple of graduations, weddings, and memorials — a song that belongs to everyone now. That ubiquity can obscure how beautifully she sings it: controlled, warm, and utterly sincere. Some songs find their singer late; this one was waiting for her.
