1977 · Behind the Songs
One woman, one piano, and an empty hall after midnight.

While Rumours was being built track by track in Sausalito, Christine McVie wrote “Songbird” in about half an hour — a love song so direct it needed no arrangement at all. Producer Ken Caillat captured it in the small hours in an empty Berkeley concert hall after a show: just McVie at the piano, the room’s natural reverb doing the work of an orchestra. No band, no overdubs, no second voice — the only Fleetwood Mac recording that features a single member alone.

Placed at the very end of Rumours, it lands like a benediction after an album of breakups and recriminations. McVie later called it one of the most personal songs she ever wrote, and its simplicity has made it a quiet favorite — proof that the band’s most extravagant record could end on its gentlest note.
