Cut at Caribou Ranch in the Colorado mountains for 1974’s Chicago VII, “Wishing You Were Here” is Peter Cetera at his most wistful — a ballad addressed to someone far away. Listen closely to the chorus and the voices lifting it belong to guests: Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Billy Hinsche of the Beach Boys, credited in the album’s liner notes. Two of the great harmony bands of the era, sharing one track, with Chicago’s horns stepping aside to let the blend shine.

Released as a single, it climbed to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 — a softer shade of Chicago that previewed the ballad-heavy direction the band would take. The Beach Boys’ cameo remains one of rock’s best-kept backing-vocal secrets: no duet billing, no fanfare, just friends from California singing behind a band from Chicago, recorded high in the Rockies.
