Boston is an American rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1975 by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Scholz. Its core at the start was Scholz and lead vocalist Brad Delp, whose clear, high singing became one of the band’s signatures. Other musicians played with the group over the years, but Scholz and Delp remained its center through its first period.

The band’s story begins with Scholz’s long preparation. He worked on songs and demos for years before the group made its debut album, Boston, in 1976. That album set the pattern for everything that followed: carefully layered guitars, strong vocal harmonies, and songs that moved between quiet passages and full, driving choruses. The follow-up, Don’t Look Back, arrived in 1978 and kept the same bright, polished rock sound, with Delp again carrying the melodies over Scholz’s guitar work.

After that, Boston worked slowly. Lineup changes and long gaps between records became part of the band’s history. Third Stage, released in 1986, was the next studio album and showed that Scholz’s approach had not changed: songs were built piece by piece, with attention to guitar tone and vocal arrangement rather than speed of release. Delp died in 2007, and Boston continued afterward with different vocalists, while Scholz remained the guiding force.
What Boston’s sound means is control made musical. The guitars are thick but clean, the harmonies are arranged rather than improvised, and the songs feel designed to be heard at volume. Boston did not chase fashion from album to album. Instead, the band returned to the same idea again and again: a well-made rock song, played with confidence, can still sound new when the parts fit exactly.
