Boz Scaggs is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist born William Royce Scaggs on June 8, 1944, in Canton, Ohio, and raised in Plano, Texas. He began his professional career in the 1960s, first as a solo artist and then as a member of the Steve Miller Band, where he played guitar and sang in the late 1960s before returning to solo work.

Scaggs’s early solo albums showed a musician moving between blues, rock, and soul, but his breakthrough came with Silk Degrees (1976). That album brought together smooth soul singing, polished studio playing, and songs that balanced romance and rhythm, and it established Scaggs as a solo star in his own right. He followed it with Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980), continuing the blend of rock, R&B, and adult pop that had become his signature.
The songs in this set trace that peak period. “Lowdown,” “Lido Shuffle,” and “We’re All Alone” all come from Silk Degrees, while “Jojo” and “Look What You’ve Done to Me” come from the Middle Man era and the film music of 1980. Together they show Scaggs’s range: a cool, rhythmic soul singer on one track, a storyteller with a rock edge on another, and a tender ballad singer on a third.

What Scaggs’s sound means is control. His voice is smooth without being bland, his guitar playing is tasteful rather than flashy, and his best records sound carefully made without sounding stiff. In later decades he continued to record and perform, returning to blues and jazz-influenced material, but the Silk Degrees and Middle Man years remain the center of his popular story — a Texas-raised singer who found a polished, soulful voice that suited both radio and the late-night listener.
