Sayonara (1957) – Marlon Brando

In Sayonara (1957), Marlon Brando plays Major Lloyd Gruver, an American air force officer in Japan after the Second World War who falls in love with Hana-ogi, a Japanese performer played by Miiko Taka. Directed by Joshua Logan, the film explores the prejudices that stood in the way of marriages between American servicemen and Japanese women.

Brando plays Gruver’s change of heart with quiet conviction, moving from duty-bound officer to a man willing to defy the rules for love. The film was a commercial and critical success, and Brando was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role.
