In Down to the Sea in Ships (1922), Clara Bow appeared in a small early role in a seafaring melodrama directed by Elmer Clifton. The film, made on location with real whaling footage, told a story of the sea, and Bow was one of the young players gaining experience in front of the camera.

Like Beyond the Rainbow, the film is important in Bow’s story chiefly as a beginning. She was still learning, still a newcomer, and the scale of the production — with its ships, storms and documentary-style footage — was very different from the intimate comedies that would later make her famous.

Within a few years, that newcomer would be the It Girl. Down to the Sea in Ships shows how far she travelled, and how quickly, from small roles in 1922 to stardom in the mid-1920s.
