Wait Until Dark (1967) is Audrey Hepburn’s most suspenseful film, as Susy Hendrix, a blind woman terrorised in her own apartment by criminals searching for a doll filled with heroin.
Hepburn played Susy with intelligence and courage, using her other senses to fight back against Alan Arkin’s terrifying villain. The film’s famous climax, in which Susy plunges her apartment into darkness to level the playing field, remains one of the great thriller endings.
Hepburn was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role. Wait Until Dark showed a completely different side of her talent, and it remains a masterclass in screen tension.
