In Jerry Maguire (1996), Tom Cruise played Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who, after being fired for writing a memo urging his firm to care more about clients, starts his own agency with one client, football player Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., and one employee, Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the film follows Jerry as he learns that success means more than money.

Cruise gave Jerry charm, panic and heart. He was a man talking fast to stay afloat, and his romance with Dorothy, and his friendship with Rod, gave the film its warmth. The role brought Cruise his second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a Golden Globe win, and Gooding won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Jerry Maguire remains a signature Cruise role because it balanced comedy and emotion, and because Jerry’s journey from slick agent to a man who values people over deals still feels fresh.
