A single mother, a daughter who wants to know her father, and a sperm-bank mix-up that changes everything — Whoopi Goldberg makes Made in America a warm, funny family story.
Released in 1993, Made in America stars Goldberg as Sarah Mathews, a widow raising her teenage daughter Zora, played by Nia Long. When Zora discovers she was conceived through a sperm donor, she tracks down the donor, played by Ted Danson, and the two families collide.
Goldberg plays Sarah with humour and strength, a mother who is proud, independent and, at first, reluctant to let a stranger into her daughter’s life. The comedy grows from character, not caricature, and the film’s ending is genuinely touching.
It is a signature 1990s role: Goldberg as a modern, capable mother, leading a comedy about family in all its unexpected forms.
