In The Furies (1950), Barbara Stanwyck played Vance Jeffords, the strong-willed daughter of a New Mexico cattle baron who fights for control of her father’s ranch. Directed by Anthony Mann, the western is a story of family pride, revenge and power, played out on a grand scale.
Vance is a formidable character — proud, stubborn and capable of great love and great anger — and Stanwyck played her with a commanding presence. Her scenes opposite Walter Huston as her father are the film’s core, a clash of two equally strong wills.
The Furies is one of Stanwyck’s most admired westerns, and it shows her at her most powerful: a star who could dominate a western landscape as easily as a drawing room.
