In The Quiet Man (1952), John Wayne played Sean Thornton, an American boxer who returns to his birthplace in Ireland to buy his family cottage and live in peace, only to fall for Mary Kate Danaher, played by Maureen O’Hara, and to clash with her brother Will. Directed by John Ford, the film follows Sean as he tries to leave violence behind, until a climactic fight restores his honour.

Wayne gave Sean a gentle, romantic presence, very different from his western heroes. The film, shot in Ireland, won Academy Awards for Ford as Best Director and for its cinematography, and it became one of Wayne’s most beloved films.

The Quiet Man remains a signature Wayne role because it showed his softer side, and because Sean Thornton’s journey home, with its humour, music and Irish landscape, still charms audiences.
