Murder on the Orient Express (1974) gave Ingrid Bergman her third Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress, as Greta Ohlsson, a Swedish missionary aboard the famous train.
Based on Agatha Christie’s novel, the film follows detective Hercule Poirot, played by Albert Finney, as he investigates a murder among a star-studded cast. Bergman’s Greta is a small but memorable role, played with a warmth and sincerity that stood out even among so many stars.
The award recognised a lifetime of work, but Greta herself is a lovely creation. Bergman brought a quiet dignity to the part, and her scenes remain a highlight of the film.
