In Shall We Dance (1937), Fred Astaire plays Peter P. Peters, a ballet dancer in Paris who pretends to be married to tap dancer Linda Keene, played by Ginger Rogers, to help her career. Directed by Mark Sandrich, with songs by George and Ira Gershwin, the film follows their pretend marriage as it turns into real romance.
Astaire’s dancing, including a famous sequence on roller skates, is inventive and elegant, and the Gershwin songs, including They Can’t Take That Away from Me, became standards. Shall We Dance is a bright, witty example of Astaire and Rogers at their peak.
