Before Titanic made him famous, DiCaprio was already astonishing audiences as Arnie Grape, a teenager with an intellectual disability whose brother carries the weight of the family.
In Lasse Hallstrom’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Arnie is the centre of a small Iowa town story, and DiCaprio plays him with a physical freedom and emotional honesty that never tips into caricature. He earned his first Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, while still a teenager.
Watching the film now, what stands out is how fully he commits: the running, the laughter, the sudden fear. It was the performance that told Hollywood this was not a child star passing through, but an actor with serious intent.
