In Friendly Persuasion (1956), Gary Cooper played Jess Birdwell, a Quaker farmer in Indiana during the Civil War who must reconcile his pacifist faith with the need to protect his family when Confederate raiders approach. Directed by William Wyler, the film follows Jess, his wife Eliza, played by Dorothy McGuire, and their children as war reaches their home.
Cooper gave Jess a warm, gentle strength, and the film’s story of faith, family and conscience earned it the Palme d’Or at Cannes and Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. It was one of Cooper’s most loved later performances.
Friendly Persuasion remains a signature Cooper role because Jess was a father first and a hero second, and because Cooper played that conflict with the quiet honesty that made him America’s trusted star.
