In Humoresque (1946), Joan Crawford played Helen Wright, a wealthy, unhappy socialite who falls in love with a young violinist from a poor family. Directed by Jean Negulesco, the film follows Helen’s affair with Paul Boray, played by John Garfield, and the sacrifices it demands.

Helen is glamorous and self-destructive, and Crawford played her with a depth that made her more than a society figure. Her scenes with Garfield, set against the world of classical music, show a performer who could convey longing and regret with restraint.

Humoresque is one of Crawford’s most admired post-war films, and it confirmed that her Mildred Pierce comeback was no single success.
