In The Maltese Falcon (1941), Humphrey Bogart played Sam Spade, a San Francisco private detective hired by a mysterious woman to find her sister, who becomes entangled in a search for a priceless falcon statuette. Directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, the film follows Spade as he deals with a cast of schemers, including Joel Cairo, played by Peter Lorre, and Kasper Gutman, played by Sydney Greenstreet.

Bogart gave Spade a cool, cynical wit and a code of his own. He was a detective who could be ruthless, but who would not let a partner’s killer go free. The film was a major success and is regarded as a founding film of film noir.

The Maltese Falcon remains a signature Bogart role because Sam Spade was the detective Bogart was born to play, and because the film’s dialogue and atmosphere still define noir.
