As Leslie Benedict, a spirited Maryland woman who marries into a Texas ranching dynasty, Taylor anchored George Stevens’ sprawling epic.
Giant (1956) spans decades, following Leslie and her husband Bick, played by Rock Hudson, as Texas changes around them, with James Dean as the brooding Jett Rink. Taylor ages her character with grace and steel, moving from bright-eyed bride to a woman who challenges the prejudices of her adopted home.
It is one of her most mature early performances, and a film that still feels large in every sense.
