In Behold a Pale Horse (1964), Omar Sharif played Manuel Artiguez, a Spanish Republican exile living in France after the Civil War, who is drawn back across the border on a mission that may cost him his life. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, from Emeric Pressburger’s novel, the film also starred Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn.
Artiguez is idealistic, weary and brave, and Sharif plays him with a conviction that makes the film’s political and personal stakes feel real. The story, set twenty years after the war, asks what loyalty means when a cause has been lost, and Sharif’s performance gives that question a human face, proud, haunted and still unwilling to surrender.
