In Malcolm X (1992), Denzel Washington gave the performance of a lifetime as the minister, activist and martyr whose journey took him from street crime to prison, to the Nation of Islam, to Mecca and to assassination. Directed by Spike Lee, the film spans decades of American history, and Washington carries every one of them.

What makes the performance so remarkable is its transformation: the young hustler Malcolm Little, the fiery minister Malcolm X, and finally the thoughtful, questioning El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz are all the same man, yet Washington makes each stage feel utterly distinct and true. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the role remains a touchstone — proof that a biographical performance can be both faithful to history and fully, thrillingly alive.
