1984 · Behind the Songs
A remix that changed the song.

“The Reflex” (1984), from Seven and the Ragged Tiger, became a No. 1 hit in a remix by Nile Rodgers that sharpened its funk and electronic rhythm. The original album version was already rhythmic, but the remix gave it a clearer, harder groove, and that groove carried the song to the top of the charts. It is a good example of how a remix can reveal a song that was already there, waiting for a different beat.

The song itself is playful and a little mysterious, with a chorus that repeats and twists rather than explaining itself. That playfulness, paired with the remix’s dance-floor energy, made “The Reflex” one of Duran Duran’s most distinctive hits, and a bridge between their new-wave roots and the dance-pop of the mid-1980s.
