“Don’t Stop Believin’” (1981), from Escape, is a song about young people in a big city, holding on to hope even when life is hard. The piano opening is now instantly recognisable, the vocal builds slowly, and the chorus arrives as a kind of promise: do not stop believing, even when the streetlights and the late nights make it difficult. It has become a stadium anthem and a karaoke standard, but its original feeling is more personal than that — a story about ordinary people trying to keep going.

The song’s structure is part of its power. It does not start with the chorus; it builds toward it, verse by verse, until the whole song opens up. That slow build mirrors the message: belief is not a sudden feeling, but something you hold on to, night after night, until it carries you through.
