“Open Arms,” from Escape (1981), is a power ballad about opening up to a love again after separation. The vocal is high and clear, the piano leads, and the song builds slowly toward a chorus that feels like an embrace. It is not a song about a new love, but about a love returning — about deciding to be open again, even after hurt. That vulnerability is what makes the ballad work: it does not hide behind volume or speed, but trusts a melody and a voice to carry a difficult feeling.

The song became one of Journey’s most loved ballads, and it showed a different side of an arena rock band. Beneath the big guitars and the stadium sound, Journey could also write a quiet, emotional song, and sing it with total sincerity. “Open Arms” is that song, and it still closes concerts and quiet moments alike.
