Randle Patrick McMurphy arrives at a mental ward pretending to be insane to escape prison work, and discovers that the ward’s real disease is not madness but control.

Randle Patrick McMurphy arrives at a mental ward pretending to be insane to escape prison work, and discovers that the ward’s real disease is not madness but control. Nurse Ratched runs it with rules, routine, and a smile that never reaches her eyes. McMurphy’s rebellion — gambling, laughter, a fishing trip, a party — is an attempt to remind the other patients that they are still alive.

Jack Nicholson plays McMurphy as pure energy, and the film’s tragedy is the slow extinguishing of that energy. The lobotomy that ends his story is not played as a twist but as an inevitability: institutions do not argue with rebels, they remove them. The film won all five major Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Nicholson, and McMurphy became a symbol of freedom that no system could quite contain — even when it destroyed the man.
