The Pirate (1948) paired Judy Garland with Gene Kelly, as Manuela, a young woman in a Caribbean village who dreams of a legendary pirate.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the film follows Manuela as she mistakes a travelling actor, played by Kelly, for the pirate she idolises. Garland sang and danced with great flair, and the film’s colourful musical numbers gave her a chance to show her full range.
Although the film was not a success on its first release, its reputation has grown. Manuela remains a delightful Garland role, full of fantasy, humour and song.
