Swing Time (1936) – Fred Astaire

In Swing Time (1936), Fred Astaire plays Lucky Garnett, a dancer and gambler who, to prove he can earn a living, heads to New York with his friend Pop, where he meets Penny Carroll, played by Ginger Rogers, a dance teacher. Directed by George Stevens, the film is a sparkling comedy about love, work, and dance.

Swing Time is often cited as Astaire and Rogers’s finest film together, with dances by Hermes Pan that include the famous Bojangles of Harlem number and the romantic Never Gonna Dance. Astaire’s performance combines comic timing with some of his most inventive choreography.
