In High Noon (1952), Gary Cooper played Marshal Will Kane, a lawman in Hadleyville who, on his wedding day to Amy, played by Grace Kelly, learns that a killer he sent to prison is returning on the noon train. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, the film follows Kane in real time as he tries to gather deputies, is abandoned by the town, and faces the gang alone.

Cooper gave Kane a weary, determined honesty, and the film’s clock-ticking tension made it a landmark western. The role won Cooper his second Academy Award for Best Actor, and the film won Academy Awards for its editing and its song, ‘Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’.

High Noon remains a signature Cooper role because Kane was the loneliest hero in westerns, a man who did his duty even when no one stood with him.
