“Mamma Mia” (1975) is a joyful, fast-moving pop song about returning to someone even though you know it will probably hurt again. The vocal is bright, the rhythm never slows, and the chorus turns a moment of weakness into a celebration. It is ABBA at their most direct: a complicated feeling, sung as if it were simple, and made memorable by a melody that does not let go.

The song also shows the group’s gift for turning a personal story into a shared one. Many listeners have known the feeling of going back to something they should leave alone, and “Mamma Mia” gives that feeling a tune to sing along to. That combination — honesty in the story, joy in the music — is why the song became a title for a stage musical and a film, long after its first release.
