In American Gangster (2007), Denzel Washington played Frank Lucas, the Harlem drug lord who built an empire by smuggling heroin directly from Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film follows Lucas’s rise and the honest detective, played by Russell Crowe, who brings him down.
Washington’s Lucas is a study in contrasts: a family man who dresses sharply, attends church and insists on loyalty, and a ruthless criminal who will do anything to protect his business. He plays the role with a calm, magnetic authority that makes Lucas’s power feel inevitable. It is one of Washington’s great mature performances — a kingpin who commands every room he enters, and who falls, in the end, by his own code.
