In Brigadoon (1954), Gene Kelly plays Tommy Albright, an American hunter who, while lost in the Scottish Highlands, stumbles upon Brigadoon, a village that appears for only one day every hundred years. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the musical follows Tommy as he falls for Fiona, played by Cyd Charisse, and must choose between his own world and hers.
Kelly’s dancing with Charisse, especially in the film’s romantic duets, is graceful and heartfelt, and the film’s use of studio sets gives it a dreamlike, theatrical quality. Brigadoon remains a beloved example of Kelly’s ability to blend fantasy and dance.
