Camille is Rudolph Valentino in a classic tragic romance, as Armand, a young man who loves Marguerite, a courtesan whose past and illness doom their happiness.

Camille (1921), directed by Ray C. Smallwood and based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel and play, stars Valentino as Armand Duval and Alla Nazimova as Marguerite Gautier. Armand falls in love with Marguerite, a celebrated courtesan, and the two try to build a life together despite society’s disapproval and Marguerite’s failing health.

Valentino’s Armand is passionate, idealistic and ultimately heartbroken, and his scenes with Nazimova are played with a sincerity that lifts the melodrama. The film’s tragic ending, in which Armand learns the truth about Marguerite’s sacrifice too late, remains moving.

It is a signature role because it shows Valentino in a literary tragedy, not a desert romance, and because Armand’s devotion became part of his romantic image.
