In Easter Parade (1948), Fred Astaire plays Don Hewes, a Broadway star who, after being left by his dance partner, vows to make a star of a chorus girl, Hannah Brown, played by Judy Garland. Directed by Charles Walters, with songs by Irving Berlin, the musical follows Don and Hannah from a disastrous first performance to the Easter Parade itself.
Astaire and Garland are a delightful pair, and their dances, including a famous slow-motion sequence in a toy shop, show Astaire’s charm and precision. Easter Parade was a major success and remains one of the most beloved musicals of the 1940s.
