In Footlight Parade (1933), James Cagney played Chester Kent, a Broadway producer struggling to keep his stage prologues alive as talking pictures take over. Directed by Lloyd Bacon, with musical numbers by Busby Berkeley, the film is a backstage musical built around Cagney’s energy and dancing.

Chester is a fast-talking showman under constant pressure, and Cagney played him with a comic urgency that matched the film’s pace. The famous Berkeley sequences — with their waterfalls, human fountains and elaborate choreography — are the film’s spectacle, but it is Cagney’s performance that holds the story together between the numbers.

Footlight Parade shows a side of Cagney that gangster films hid: the vaudeville-trained musical performer, comfortable with song, dance and comedy, and able to carry a big Warner Bros. musical with ease.
