Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) – Judy Garland

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) gave Judy Garland a powerful dramatic role, as Irene Hoffman, a woman who testifies at the trial of Nazi judges.

Garland played Irene with a quiet dignity, in a film that dealt with justice and responsibility after the Second World War. Her courtroom scene, in which she describes her own suffering, was widely praised and earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The role showed Garland’s dramatic gifts beyond musicals. Irene’s courage and honesty made her scenes among the most moving in the film.
