“Celebration” (1980), from Celebrate!, is the band’s most widely known song, and the band’s only song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its cultural life is not in doubt: it has become the default soundtrack for weddings, birthdays, sports wins and New Year’s Eve. Few songs cross from a specific record into a shared ritual so completely.

The music explains why. The groove is steady and welcoming, the horns lift the chorus without pushing it, and the vocal invites everyone in rather than showing off. It is a party song that does not depend on a particular party. Heard in a small room or a large hall, it does the same job: it gives people a reason to move together, and a simple reason to feel good about doing it.
