No one in pop has reinvented herself as often — or as completely — as Madonna.
Madonna Louise Ciccone, born 16 August 1958 in Bay City, Michigan, is an American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur whose immense popularity in the 1980s and ’90s gave her levels of power and control nearly unprecedented for a woman in the entertainment industry. The Biography
New York, 1978
Madonna moved to New York City in 1978 to pursue a career in dance. She performed as a drummer, guitarist and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy before achieving solo success. She signed a singles contract with Sire Records in 1982; her debut single, “Everybody”, was released in October 1982, and she signed an albums deal in 1983.
Like a Virgin
Her self-titled debut album, Madonna, was released on 27 July 1983, and its first hit single, “Holiday” (1983), forged an upbeat dance-club sound. Her second album, Like a Virgin, released on 12 November 1984 and produced by Nile Rodgers, became her first number-one album in the United States. The title track topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks. At the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 she performed “Like a Virgin” on top of a giant wedding cake in a wedding dress, and rolled around on the stage floor — a performance MTV later called one of its most iconic. True Blue followed on 30 June 1986 and became her best-selling studio album.
The video star
Madonna was the first female artist to exploit fully the potential of the music video, collaborating with top designers, photographers and directors to create distinctive sexual and satirical images. Her landmark videos include those for “Like a Virgin”, “Material Girl”, “Express Yourself”, “Vogue”, “Justify My Love”, “Ray of Light” and “Hung Up”. Like a Prayer was released in 1989, and The Immaculate Collection, her first greatest-hits compilation, in 1990.
Erotica, Evita, and Ray of Light
In 1992 Madonna released the book Sex and the album Erotica, and founded Maverick Records. Bedtime Stories followed in 1994. In 1996 she starred in the film Evita, winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. In 1998 she released Ray of Light, her first album of new material in four years, recorded with producer William Orbit. A fusion of techno music and self-conscious lyrics, it was a commercial and critical success, earning her first musical Grammy Awards, among them Best Pop Album. She won another Grammy the following year for “Beautiful Stranger”, from the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999).
The 2000s and beyond
Music (2000) became her fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, her first No. 1 in 11 years since Like a Prayer. American Life followed in 2003, and in 2005 she returned to her disco roots with Confessions on a Dance Floor, which won the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album and yielded the hit “Hung Up”. Hard Candy was released in 2008, and on 10 March 2008 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. Later albums included MDNA (2012), promoted at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, Rebel Heart (2015) and Madame X (2019), which became her ninth No. 1 album in the US. In 2023 the US Library of Congress added Like a Virgin to the National Recording Registry.
