A boxing trainer, a determined young fighter, and a narrator who has seen it all — Morgan Freeman gives Million Dollar Baby its heartbreaking wisdom.
Released in 2004, Million Dollar Baby stars Clint Eastwood as Frankie Dunn, a boxing trainer, Hilary Swank as Maggie Fitzgerald, a waitress who wants to box, and Freeman as Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris, Frankie’s friend and the gym’s caretaker, who narrates the story.
Freeman’s narration is warm and knowing, and Eddie himself is a former boxer who understands both the sport and its cost. He is the film’s conscience, watching Frankie and Maggie’s bond grow and knowing where it may lead.
It is a signature role, and the one that won Freeman the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, because Eddie is both a character and a storyteller, and Freeman plays both with complete humanity.
