In Morocco (1930), Gary Cooper played Tom Brown, a Foreign Legionnaire in North Africa who falls for cabaret singer Amy Jolly, played by Marlene Dietrich, even though she is also pursued by a wealthy suitor. Directed by Josef von Sternberg, the film follows Tom and Amy as pride, jealousy and desert heat test their love.
Cooper gave Tom a relaxed, romantic charm, and his chemistry with Dietrich, in her first American film, made Morocco a landmark of early sound cinema. The film earned Academy Award nominations, including for Dietrich and for von Sternberg.
Morocco remains a signature Cooper role because it showed him as a romantic leading man beyond the western, and because Tom Brown’s desert romance still feels exotic and tender.
