Henri Charrière, called Papillon, is a convict determined to escape Devil’s Island; Louis Dega is the forger who finances him and becomes his closest friend. Dustin Hoffman plays Dega as the film’s conscience — a small, bespectacled man whose loyalty is the only thing the prison cannot break.

Opposite Steve McQueen’s granite-like Papillon, Hoffman is all nervous warmth: the glasses, the money hidden where no guard will look, the friendship that deepens across years of punishment. When Dega finally chooses to stay rather than risk another escape, Hoffman plays it not as cowardice but as wisdom — a man who has learned what freedom is actually worth.

The film’s famous ending, Papillon leaping into the sea, works because Dega stayed behind. Hoffman makes that choice feel like love, not surrender.
