“Smooth Operator,” from Diamond Life (1984), is Sade’s signature song. It tells of a charming man who moves through cities and through brief relationships, told in a vocal that stays cool and distant throughout. The arrangement is smooth and unhurried, with a saxophone line that drifts like the man it describes. The song does not judge its subject, and it does not celebrate him either. It watches him, calmly, and lets the listener decide what to feel.

That coolness is what makes the song last. It does not try to explain the operator or to excuse him. It presents a type — the smooth, travelling charmer — in a few clear images, and lets the music do the rest. Heard today, it still sounds modern, because it never raises its voice to make its point.
