DIANE KEATON · 1973 · SIGNATURE ROLES

Luna Schlosser is a poet and activist in a totalitarian future America, and she is not happy to meet Miles Monroe, a health-food-store owner frozen in 1973 and thawed two hundred years later.

Luna Schlosser is a poet and activist in a totalitarian future America, and she is not happy to meet Miles Monroe, a health-food-store owner frozen in 1973 and thawed two hundred years later. Diane Keaton plays Luna as a true believer who slowly, hilariously, becomes a rebel — and her comic timing, opposite Woody Allen’s, is the film’s other great special effect.

Sleeper is a slapstick science-fiction comedy, full of giant vegetables and robot butlers, and Keaton grounds it: Luna’s earnestness makes the satire land, and her transformation from conformist to revolutionary gives the jokes a story to hang on. It was her second film with Allen, and it proved their partnership could carry a genre as easily as a romance.
