Star Wars (1977) – Alec Guinness

He was the first Jedi most audiences ever met, and he gave a space adventure its soul: a kind old man, a lightsaber, and a voice that made the Force feel real.

Released in 1977, Star Wars introduces Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the former Jedi knight living in exile on Tatooine. When Luke Skywalker discovers a message for help, Obi-Wan becomes his guide, explaining the Force and handing him his father’s lightsaber.

Guinness plays Obi-Wan with warmth, humour and gravity, and his early scenes do the film’s most important work: they make an extraordinary universe feel human. His duel, his sacrifice and his voice returning after death give the adventure its emotional spine.

It is a signature role for a new generation of fans, and a perfect late-career example of his gift: he took a story he might have dismissed, treated it with complete seriousness, and made it timeless.
