In Stella Dallas (1937), Barbara Stanwyck played Stella, a working-class woman who sacrifices her own happiness so that her daughter can have a better life. Directed by King Vidor, the melodrama follows Stella from a hopeful young wife to a mother who deliberately pushes her daughter away, believing the girl will be happier without her.

Stanwyck’s performance is the film’s heart. She played Stella without vanity, showing her vulgarity, her warmth and her love all at once, and she made the final sacrifice believable rather than merely sentimental. The film earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Stella Dallas remains one of the great maternal melodramas, and Stanwyck’s title role is a key reason it still moves audiences today.
