HARRISON FORD · 1980 · SIGNATURE ROLES

The Empire Strikes Back is the darkest Star Wars film, and Han Solo is its heart.

The Empire Strikes Back is the darkest Star Wars film, and Han Solo is its heart. Harrison Ford plays Solo through a romance, a betrayal, a torture, and a freezing — and his final line, in response to Leia’s declaration of love, was improvised: “I know.” It became the most famous line in the saga, because it is the most Solo line imaginable: cocky, tender, and unwilling to say the expected thing.

The film’s cliffhanger — Solo frozen in carbonite and handed to a bounty hunter — left audiences in suspense for three years, and Ford’s performance is the reason they cared. He had made a smuggler into a hero without ever making him respectable, and The Empire Strikes Back proved that a space opera could carry real emotional weight, as long as Harrison Ford was in it to undercut it.
