The Nun’s Story (1959) is Audrey Hepburn’s most serious dramatic role, as Sister Luke, a Belgian nun whose faith and independence come into conflict.
The film follows Sister Luke from her convent in Belgium to work as a nurse in the Belgian Congo, and then back to Europe during the Second World War. Hepburn played her with a quiet intensity, showing a woman who takes her vows seriously yet cannot suppress her own conscience.
Hepburn was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role. It remains a powerful performance, one that showed she could carry a demanding drama without glamour or comedy.
