In The Searchers (1956), John Wayne played Ethan Edwards, a Confederate veteran who returns to Texas after the Civil War to find his brother’s family killed by Comanche, and who spends years searching for his niece Debbie, played by Natalie Wood. Directed by John Ford, the film follows Ethan and his nephew Martin, played by Jeffrey Hunter, across the West.

Wayne gave Ethan a dark, obsessive intensity. He was a hero driven by hatred as much as by love, and the film’s ending, in which Ethan brings Debbie home but cannot enter the house himself, became one of the most famous images in westerns. The Searchers is now widely regarded as one of the greatest American films.

The Searchers remains a signature Wayne role because Ethan was his most complex creation, a man whose search revealed both his strength and his flaws.
